Job Summary and Qualifications
Maintains 24-hour responsibility for the supervision, coordination and evaluation of nursing care provided on the assigned unit. The Nurse Manager of Outpatient Surgery also coordinates and supervises the activities for the unit, which support the safe and efficient delivery of care. The Manager assists the Director in the implementation of Performance Improvement activities, hospital policies/procedures, and in the financial management of the unit.
Staffing/Scheduling
- Maintains 24-hour accountability for the direction, supervision, coordination and evaluation of activities and services of the assigned units.
- Works with Clinical Supervisor to develop monthly schedule for the unit complying with staffing plans.
- Reviews daily staffing schedule to assure adequate coverage for cases. Ensuring Clinical Supervisors obtain additional staffing or cancels as needed.
- Monitors the use of agency, overtime, and bonus shifts and assures the use is necessary and appropriate.
Interviewing/Hiring
- Interviews and hires staff based upon budgeted positions.
- Maintains knowledge of position control and available requisitions.
- Assists the Director in maintaining a current position control and employee requisitions.
Evaluation/Progressive Discipline
- Performs at least 90% of all evaluations in a timely manner.
- Demonstrates the ability to identify clinical and performance related problems and takes appropriate actions.
- Provides constructive feedback and coaching for staff development.
- Performs progressive discipline according to hospital policy
Orientation/Competency Assessment/Staff Development
- Schedules and oversees orientation of new staff.
- Assures all orientation documents are completed and filed at completion of orientation.
- Identifies educational/in-service needs of the staff and collaborates with the unit educator to provide appropriate educational opportunities.
- Assists the Director in reviewing and modifying competency requirements for the unit on an annual basis. New equipment, procedures, and identified problem areas are evaluated for competency requirements.
Communication
- Assists Clinical Supervisors with Planning and conducting bimonthly staff meetings. Meetings may include: new and revised policies and procedures, results of PI activities, results of customer satisfaction surveys, and unit specific information.
- Regularly communicates information to staff members between staff meetings.
- Collaborates with peers to improve interdepartmental processes resulting in more efficient services.
- Clinical resource for the Nursing Unit.
Leadership
- Participates in hospital or departmental performance improvement activities.
- Serves as an advocate for nursing staff.
- Provides leadership and supervision necessary to assure a high standard of nursing care is provided on the unit.
- Establishes systems to promote an effective and efficient environment for the delivery of care.
- Identifies and responds to problems impacting the unit.
- Strives to improve satisfaction of patients, surgeons, and employees.
- Makes frequent rounds to determine any issues/concerns.
- Communicates regularly with surgeons to determine satisfaction of services.
- Participates in financial management of the assigned unit.
- Participates in financial planning/budgeting for the assigned unit.
What qualifications you will need:
Education:
License/Certifications:
- TX RN License or RN Compact State License
- BLS from approved HCA vendor.
- ACLS from approved HCA vendor. If currently have ACLS it must be maintained; if not, it must be obtained within 6 months of hire and then maintained.
- PALS from approved HCA vendor. If currently have PALS it must be maintained; if not, it must be obtained within 6 months of hire and then maintained.
Experience:
- Minimum 3 years of experience as a staff nurse in the operating room or other surgical area.
- Prior management experience preferred or demonstrated ability to serve in a leadership role.
- Cardiovascular experience a plus.
