Zurich North America is seeking an accomplished and forward‑looking VP, Liability Underwriting Officer to help shape and advance our Liability underwriting vision across the United States. This influential leader will guide technical excellence, strengthen underwriting capabilities, and support the continued evolution of our Commercial General Liability and Excess Casualty portfolios.
Reporting to the VP, Casualty Lines Underwriting Officer, this position plays a key role in shaping the Liability portfolio, delivering actionable insights, and partnering with business units to execute strategy with clarity, consistency, and impact.

What You’ll Do
Strategic Underwriting Leadership
- Drive Liability portfolio profitability through KPI monitoring of profitability levers. Support business unit execution on Liability portfolio strategy to optimize risk selection, enhance profitability, and deliver sustainable performance through disciplined management and forward-looking insight.
- Advance Zurich’s Liability underwriting strategy by strengthening guidelines, appetite, technical standards, and underwriting frameworks across Commercial General Liability and Excess Casualty.
- Stay ahead of industry, legal, and market trends—ensuring our underwriting direction remains modern, competitive, and well‑positioned for long‑term success.
- Partner with senior leaders to support the development and implementation of business unit portfolio strategies.
Actionable Insights & Technical Excellence
- Transform data, market intelligence, and claims insights into practical underwriting actions that enhance decision‑making and risk evaluation.
- Collaborate with actuarial, claims, risk engineering, and data partners to elevate underwriting technical capabilities and support continuous improvement.
- Promote disciplined underwriting practices and consistent execution across teams and regions.
Cross‑Enterprise Collaboration & Influence
- Build strong, trust‑based relationships with business unit Heads of Underwriting, regional underwriters, and global colleagues to ensure cohesive execution of underwriting strategy.
- Serve as an influential voice across the organization, elevating technical acumen, fostering innovation, and helping teams anticipate and navigate emerging risks.
- Contribute to enterprise transformation initiatives aimed at modernizing processes, tools, and underwriting capabilities.
Governance & Stewardship
- Oversee alignment of underwriting policies, procedures, and operating standards across the Liability portfolio.
- Assess evolving external developments—such as emerging exposures and regulatory shifts—and ensure strategies remain relevant and forward‑looking.
- Support resource planning, product evolution, and prioritized investments that advance underwriting performance and organizational objectives.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelors Degree and 10 or more years of experience in the Operations area
AND - Experience working globally or internationally with underwriting partners
- Supervisory or management experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- CPCU
- Technical knowledge and multi-level leadership skills reflective of a practitioner who has been operating at a senior underwriting level or manager role
- Track record of fostering business improvement and delivering change in a complex insurance environment
Your pay at Zurich is based on your role, location, skills, and experience. We follow local laws to ensure fair compensation. You may also be eligible for bonuses and merit increases. If your expectations are above the listed range, we still encourage you to apply—your unique background matters to us. The pay range shown is a national average and may vary by location. The proposed Salary range for this position is $197,800.00 - $324,000.00, with short-term incentive bonus eligibility set at 25%.
