Essential Functions
• Organizes and administers the Department of Nursing.
• Establishes objectives for the Department of Nursing and the organizational structure for achieving these objectives.
• Interprets and causes to be affected administrative policies as established by governing authority.
• Prepares and administers the Nursing Department operational and capital budgets.
• Selects and appoints nursing staff to ensure the provisions of quality patient care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week according to the demonstrated nursing care hours required and as set forth in the Code of the State of New York.
• Determines the functions assigned to all levels of nursing staff.
• Directs and delegates management of professional and ancillary nursing personnel.
• Plans and conducts conferences and discussions with administrative and professional nursing staff to encourage participation in formulating departmental policies and procedures.
• Coordinates activities of various nursing units, thereby, promoting and maintaining harmonious relationships among nursing personnel with the Medical Staff, residents, their families, and the general public.
• Plans and directs orientation and in-service training programs for professional and nonprofessional nursing staff. Participates in in-service training sessions with other disciplines.
• Approves or rejects field placement program requests with accredited Schools of Nursing.
• Analyzes and evaluates nursing and related services throughout the home to improve quality of resident care and to plan better utilization of staff time and activities.
• Hires, terminates, transfers and/or promotes staff while evaluating and stabilizing services in the Nursing Home.
• Clearly defines the duties of each member of his/her staff and develops job descriptions for them.
• Clearly understands labor relations, and keeps abreast of legislation which affects the nursing profession.
• Develops and maintains and effective system of nursing records and reports.
• Reviews and revises resident care policies, procedure manuals, and nursing personnel policies periodically.
• Encourages participation of nursing personnel in activities which promote individual professional growth.
• Participates in community educational health programs.
• Participates in administrative and inter-departmental meetings.
• Assumes additional duties as required by the Administrator.
